ドラマのＴＢＳが開局６０周年記念ドラマとして超大型の連続ドラマを計画しています。

日本がはじめて挑戦した第一次南極越冬隊は
隊員と共に南極での越冬を成功させた樺太犬１９頭を悪天候のため、南極に置き去りにしました。
その後第三次越冬隊が南極で樺太犬のタロとジロを発見した感動の実話があります。

この感動物語をキムタク（木村拓哉）主演で連続ドラマ化されます。

同じ題材の映画「南極物語」が1983年に高倉健主演で公開されましたが、ＴＢＳのドラマは映画のリメークではなく、実際の越冬隊員だった北村泰一さんの著書「南極越冬隊タロジロの真実」を元にしたオリジナルストーリーとなります。


木村拓哉が演じるのは世界ではじめて１年間の南極滞在に挑戦した第一次南極越冬隊の副隊長役。キムタク演じる副隊長は地質学者で樺太犬の世話係もしていました。

ドラマではタロとジロに再開する感動がクライマックスとなりますが、そのエピソードだけでなく、当時は第二次世界大戦の戦勝国・米国やソ連が中心の南極観測に日本が挑戦することに海外から「敗戦国に南極観測などできるはずがない」と見下されていたことや
全国の子供達の熱い声援があったことも描かれます。

主演する木村拓哉は
